Brief

Oil and gas client needed a solution to track maintenance issues for 10,000+ wellheads with pre-1995 SCADA controllers.

Problem

The client needed to create a robust and reliable solution to track maintenance issues for 10,000+ wells with pre-1995 SCADA controllers. These 20+ year-old SCADA controllers were nearing end-of-life, and required updating through a serial port to pull, or push, configuration data. Many of these wells are in remote areas without cell or internet coverage. Essentially, the wells needed mobile and offline functionality to track maintenance issues, and make do until the wells themselves could be retired, rather than replacing 10,000+ SCADA controllers for wells that would be retired within five years.

Solution

Becoming Machinic created a mobile app that would function offline, but would sync with machinic.io when online. Technicians in the field could pull current configurations from the cloud, store them
locally on their phones, and push directly to the controller without internet, and sync back to the
cloud once they’re back in coverage.
